Getting hitched soon? Sophie Hazan looks at the pros and cons of taking out insurance to cover your big day.

it is a fact that weddings cost as much as a new car.

No matter how many people you invite, or where you exchange vows, just mention the ‘W’ word and the costs soon add up.

Even frugal Yorkshire couples – the region spent less on their Big Day than anywhere else in England – managed to splash an average of £14,239 last year, according to a study.

It is forecast that figure will slightly fall in 2012, said Adam Leyton, pictured below, of Leeds-based CompareWeddingInsurance.org.uk, but only slightly.

And yet three in four people do not take out wedding insurance, he added.

Consumerwatch looks at whether you should say ‘I do’ to wedding insurance?

Nick Smith, 33, and fiancee Sarah Houseman, 28, from Menston, do not think so.

Despite splashing out on a lavish wedding reception to be held at the Devonshire Arms in North Yorkshire next month they have not taken out any extra cover.

But they did make sure all ‘pricey’ purchases were put on a credit card.

Nick, a district commander for West Yorkshire Fire District Commander, said: “The reason we didn’t get wedding insurance is because we didn’t see any major risk to our wedding plans.

“If anything happened that caused us to have to cancel [such as] serious illness, the financial side would be the least of our worries, since we’ve already saved up for it. Having to pay it is just more expense.

“Anything we thought may be risky we put on a credit card.

“We do have travel insurance for the honeymoon though.”

He added: “In reality it is a bit risky, but I am a tight Yorkshireman!”

Insurance seller Adam, 35, who works from home in Horsforth, Leeds, would of course argue the opposite, but claims this is not just because he makes a living from it.

He said: “I am a big advocate of wedding insurance, not just because we sell it, but because it’s so cheap you can’t afford not to.

“You have only got to look at the top 10 wedding insurance claims made last year, and you’ll find the top three all came down to bankruptcy whether it was the florist, cake maker, dress maker or venue.”

There are of course other reasons too.

Adam pointed out that venues are occasionally double-booked; weather can be so bad that the majority of the guests can’t get there; or the bride, groom or immediate family are seriously injured.

Wedding insurance generally covers the unexpected, such as illness, cancellation or failure of suppliers.

Premiums start from less than £20, which makes it worth considering, added Adam.

Becci Elvin, 23, and fiance Macs Dickinson, 23, from East Ardsley, Leeds, certainly thought so.

They are due to tie-the-knot in Spring in south Yorkshire.

So far it has cost them £17,500, a figure that could still rise as they have not set a budget.

Becci said: “We did take out insurance because we felt that with the large amounts we were spending on things like venue and catering that we should have some kind of back-up in case something went wrong.

“Our venue recommended it to us as a ‘just in case’ – in case the caterer went bust, or we had a family emergency and had to postpone the wedding.”

Not that insurance cover protects you in every eventuality.

UK policies do not cover ‘cold feet’; deciding not to get married is not deemed a valid reason for an insurer to pay out.

And some will not insure deposits, or other items paid for before the policy began.

Adam said: “In many cases you can take out insurance right up to the day before you are due to exchange vows.

“But be careful and read the small print, as some policies will not cover deposits and payments made before the day it starts.

“My advise is to work out your budget, and take out insurance before you start spending.”

The average wedding insurance premium costs £51.55. UK weddings cost £15,500 in 2011, a figure that is predicted to drop to £14,500 in 2012.

Put anything that costs more than £100 and up to £30,000 on credit card. You can claim under section 75 if there is a breach of contract.

Check you have cover for wedding attire, rings, wedding cars and photography. You can add on extras.

For starters, you are able to and you also must – insist that you receive the opportunity present your thinking. This is especially important in terms of how you want the photos to show out and just how you need to look. It’s wedding in the end! Therefore, you must have a say. It will stay with you forever and also you want your wedding pictures to become the top possible! The blush on ought to be applied carefully, with the firm type of the cheekbone outlined by a brush or applicator, and just a faint color needs to be applied, carrying it as being far down since the edges from the cheek line. There ought to be hardly any color application around the bottom of the chin. Lip line should be covered to be able using a definite shade. Utilizing a light colored pressed powder within the face and the neck is a superb method to increase the risk for facial color look natural.

Not every outdoors lights are ideal. The worst period to take family portraits outdoors is mid-day. The very best times of day are what many photographers refer to because the “Golden Hours” the hour before sunset and after dawn when the light is softest as well as the shadows least harsh. The better today you are able to gather your family for portrait, the greater. There are tons of reasons for taking family portraits outdoors. Outdoor scenery creates to get a fun and attractive background which incorporates the areas of nature as well as the best forms of lighting for photographs. In the studio, the external flash with the camera and studio lights and reflectors are designed to mimic natural lighting that is readily available outdoors. Thus, outdoor family portraits eliminate the dependence on extra equipment.

Backdrops are convenient however they have been done to death. You’ll begin to see common backdrops between different families’ portraits. To go combined with previous two ideas, use natural backgrounds. Yes, this means that the portraits needs to be taken outside (make sure to set your white balance). Natural lighting may also be somewhat harsh on sunshine therefore it is better to take these portraits right after sunrise or perhaps before sunset.A powerful back light provides illumination for that veil and an edge light for the groom’s face. Sufficient light must be provided for the faces so they won’t come off as too dark. The most effective facial expressions show their happiness with out them smiling too hard or looking giddy. Your eye area should follow the nose direction for a natural look.Lighting is another important a part of your portrait. In case you are taking your photo inside then make sure you use the flash on your own camera. Alternatively when having a photo outdoors somewhere within the vast Perth landscapes, it is advisable to use the sun’s light at either sunrise or sunset (this is the time its at its best). Another person’s situated in a shady area, you then must also benefit from your cameras flash here.Among the easiest locations to take outdoor family portraits can be in your backyard. Additionally, you could also consider a place that you simply and your family frequently visit or even a local park. In case you are choosing the right location that’s away from home for the portraits, make sure you consider the time of day once you will taking your pictures so that you can avoid the crowds and then for any people that can hinder your shots. As with every picture, be sure to hide or remove clutter without anyone’s knowledge. Do you wish to make use of the natural outdoor lighting but desire a plain background? Tack a bit of fabric to some fence. Look into the lawn for sprinklers and behind the family for stuff that may be distracting, like a lamp post.

The following tips and recommendations will provide you with details on photography. To add long shadows, capture light at a low angle. People take pictures for end number of reasons, varying from eminently practical reasons to sentimental motivational concerns. However, for conjugal photography you accept to board with bells atmosphere. You will discover that as you start having more influence over the final image, your confidence as a photographer will increase in leaps and bounds. Is there anywhere characters come across exquisite photography tricks and traps? No doubt you can start to see the difference between merely taking a fairly honest but unflattering photograph of a product, and using commercial product photography experts to create an image which is likely to catch people's attention, and encourage them to buy the product, or at least to find out more. I have to wimp out on conveying the impression of being lonesome. In conclusion - like most other photography strategies it really is crucial to make use of macro photography in the proper scenarios. I went for a drive, set my tripod up and bam! When the meal was presented to you it was steaming hot, literally, but the problem with steam is that it doesn't actually last very long, and often it will disappear in seconds once the plate is served up.

For all its growth over the past few years, the niche industry of deal-of-the-day websites has often felt impersonal—exchanging money with a colorful, neatly designed page for a coupon to be used in the brick-and-mortar world. While the final transaction is tangible, sometimes, it’s nice to know the middleman.

LivingSocial, the rapidly growing deal-of-the-day company based in Washington, is trying to fill in some of that gap with the opening of its new facility at 918 F Street NW. The old, Romanesque National Union Building, constructed in 1890, has been converted into a four stories of playrooms for LivingSocial to stage its more upmarket deals, including pop-up dinners, art classes, dance lessons, cooking seminars and live music. More directly, it also gives the company a tangible connection to its customer base.

Walking through the retro-sleek lobby as contractors finished installing floorboards, the company’s communications director, Maire Griffin, showed off the room’s original, ornate frieze which—thanks to one of many modern embellishments—now tops a wall plastered with video panels. A screensaver whirred on the display Monday morning, but once the venue later this week, it’ll give lobby-dwellers glimpses of what’s going on upstairs.

“It gives merchants a whole new way to interact with members,” Griffin said.

Behind the lobby is a nightclub-like room that opens up to a basement bar, all decked out in matte-black hardwood flooring. The first show, this Sunday, is an acoustic set by the jam band O.A.R. The live music schedule isn’t too heavy right now, and the bar will used more as a location for mixology lessons or as a starting point for a fancy food event.

Above the lobby is a lounge area that’ll likely contain more video feeds of the goings-on about the building. The waiting areas might feature demonstrations, Griffin said; those parts of the space are still in flux. In the rear of the second floor is the first of two “flex rooms”—studios that can be rearranged to accomodate any of the non-culinary offerings.

LivingSocial signed a longterm lease for 918 F Street last May, and started renovating about six months ago, Griffin said. The structure, which had been partially filled by offices, has been dramatically reconfigured, save that frieze in the lobby and the elevator, which is one of the last cage lifts in the city. Construction teams ripped out load-bearing mortar walls, replacing the building’s structural support with exposed gridworks of steel beams, about 240 tons’ worth, Griffin said. The floors are tiled in individually laid wooden slats placed on their side to reinforce the structure and add a bit of soundproofing, which will come in handy when a classroom is given over to, say, heavy-footed dancers.

“One hour we could do a tango class,” Griffin said, “and we could flip the room to make it a painting class.”

But it’s the third and fourth floors Griffin was most proud to show off, and for good measure. The culinary sections of LivingSocial’s new playground are where the company will sell its highest-profile deals, beginning later this week with a four-day pop-up restaurant by Mike Isabella, who will be testing out the menu for his forthcoming Mexican eatery, Bandolero.

For the chefs it’s recruiting—besides Isabella, the company has also lined up deals starring Frederick DePue of 42 Catering and Kyle Bailey and Tiffany MacIsaac from Birch & Barley—LivingSocial has built a commercial kitchen on par with any decent restaurant. Shimmering Viking ranges and Cres Cor refrigerators line the workspace, which is large enough to handle a full restaurant’s worth of sous chefs and line cooks.

“Everyone who comes in there is going to do something different, but for me it has what I need,” Isabella said in an interview.

On the other side of the floor is the cooking classroom, where LivingSocial’s roster of culinarily inclined business partners will teach the masses how to make chocolate or sushi or ramen, depending on the instructor. The kitchen area up front wouldn’t be out of place on a Food Network set, including the motion-capture cameras above the countertops that will follow the instructors around so that customers sitting way in the back of the basketball court-sized room can see on overhead televisions.

The dining room for the one-off restaurants is one flight up, and while nicely appointed down to the Güral Porselen dinnerware, it’s a dining room, albeit one that might be used for a digital photography class earlier in the day.

To start, 918 F Street is open only to LivingSocial subscribers who have bought into one of the deals advertised on the site. The company may open itself to walk-ins in the future, but for now it’s sticking to the prepaid set and so far, Griffin said, business is good. Isabella’s Bandolero preview sold out for each of its four days at $119 per person, and the Birch & Barley special ($85) appears to be going quickly, too.

LivingSocial, which is privately held, won’t disclose how much money it poured into the building, but it’s considerable. “We like to take calculated risks,” Griffin said. A recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing by Amazon, which owns nearly one-third of the company, revealed that LivingSocial lost $558 million in 2011, though the company also just raised an $176 million in new venture funding. Additionally, its bottom line was also likely affected by its aggressive expansion last year, which saw LivingSocial acquire several regional deal sites and increase its payroll from 600 to nearly 5,000, about 20 percent of whom work in D.C.

One risk here, perhaps the biggest, is that a physical storefront is untried in the deal-of-the-day business, or most e-commerce, for that matter. Customers won’t really be interacting with LivingSocial employees (though the top two floors of the building are the latest corporate office), but they’ll be in contact with chefs and artists who are working under LivingSocial’s roof. The company’s chief rival, Groupon, has nothing like this in its home base of Chicago.

For the merchants, especially chefs like Isabella, LivingSocial hopes the building can be seen as a reliable laboratory. “If I just had Graffiato I wouldn’t be doing a pop-up because I’d do whatever I want in my restaurants,” he said. But with his pop-up this week at LivingSocial, he can give his staff for the forthcoming Bandolero a bit more of a runway.

“Perfect opportunity to start training,” he said. “Here, a nice portion of the menu my chefs will have already seen” when the actual restaurant opens in Georgetown later this year.

Isabella also thinks LivingSocial might be able to attract some of his chef friends in other cities to make spot appearances in Washington, especially experimenters like Marc Vetri of Vetri in Philadelphia or Wylie Dufresne of New York’s WD-50.

But the real novelty isn’t that LivingSocial is selling one-off food events—it’s been doing those for a while. The game-changer here is that rather than using one’s own restaurant, a chef partnering with LivingSocial will do their special event under the company’s banner. And it helps LivingSocial beyond coupons and into special-interest retail. The items being sold at 918 F Street aren’t really “deals,” in fact, some of them will be quite pricey, but people are going for it, Griffin said.

“It’s more about access than discounts,” she said. “It’s the value of time and members’ experience.”

There are numerous methods for you to benefit in case you are thinking of having online photography classes. The web offers everyone, regardless if you are a photography enthusiast or someone who would like to develop their photography skills and then make it a compensated profession, with wide variety of information together with interactive and comprehensive learning tools that may help you enhance your photography skills quickly.

Online Photography Classes Perks

Listed here are some of the perks that you could get if you are taking online photography classes:

Begin the moment you’re all set. It is common for online classes to have moving registration. Which means waiting around for a new semester to begin is not needed. Whenever you are ready, you may get started.

Self-paced learning. In case you plan on taking online classes, you can fix your own timetable. Not everyone are able to afford to go to school full-time or are able to go to classes during regular school hours. Self-paced training, like with many online photography classes, is good for people who have active lives, full time careers, and families. Self-paced training is great for most of us considering that everybody comes to understand at different pace. If you’ll want considerably more time to understand, you’ll have it. Rather than waiting for everyone in the class to catch up, if you’re a speedy learner, it is possible to begin the next lesson.

Cost is lesser than other methods. It’s no secret that college and university classes are pricey. Compared to other traditional training methods, online photography classes normally cost considerably cheaper.

Efficiency Online schools along with today’s tools and resources are actually comprehensive and often interactive. You most likely are troubled that you’ll get lost or have trouble doing your classes by yourself. The same with bricks and mortar classroom, it’s also possible to get the same one-on-one personal assistance with online courses. Sometimes you’ll receive even more support from your instructor!

What’s discussed in online photography classes?

Not all online photography classes are the same yet somehow most courses will certainly cover many characteristics. Some fields that might be covered can include film improvement, lighting and colour, portfolio creation, taking improved photos, and retouching, editing, etc. Other areas that will probably be covered are photography software and camera technology, such as film, equipment and leses. If you wish to discover how to acquire work in the photography industry after course completion, many courses also cover this area.

People tend to prefer traditional classroom learning since most of them either didn’t take online courses or have chosen an inappropriate school to acquire training from.

Comparing Several Photography Courses Offered

The value, help you can obtain, course outline, extent of course, costs and exclusions will be the things that you need to understand. Whether you intend to be a better photographer because you intend to make money with photography or you wish to improve photography skills for your own self improvement and passion for photography, the appropriate online photography course will make a big difference as to what you derive from the courses along with the outcome.

Most photographers would say their lens is their most critical piece of equipment. It is used for many vital aspects that make an excellent photo. These include focusing on the subject, the amount of scene captured and passing light to the camera’s sensor. Therefore, choosing the right lens for the type of picture you are taking is crucial to the success of your final image. Lenses are divided into groups, depending on the field of view they give. When following a photography course online, it helps to know which lens to use for each situation, or assignment.

Wide-angle lenses cover a field of view from approximately 110 degrees to 60 degrees. You can get some distortion when using extremely wide-angle lenses, noticeable around the edges of the frame. Any lens of 35mm or smaller would be considered wide-angled. Wide-angle lenses normally display a large depth of field, which keeps the foreground and background in focus. This is ideal for landscape photography. They also work well indoors, if space is tight, as the lens will be able to capture more of the scene. Wide-angles work well for shots of large groups, but would not be recommended for close-up portraits.

A normal lens has a field of view of about 45 degrees – roughly the same as the human eye. The normal lens for full-frame or 35mm cameras is 50mm. Normal lenses are ideal for photographing people, architecture, and most general needs of a photography course online. There is little distortion and medium-range depth of field.

Longer focal range lenses are referred to as telephoto. They vary in length from 135mm to 800mm plus. Their field of view is 35mm or under. These lenses allow you to capture distant objects in detail, although the angle of view is reduced to the magnification of the scene. You will achieve a much narrower depth of field. Telephotos are useful for sports photography, or for a situation where you need to get up close to your subject.

A zoom lens can be a fine compromise, saving the need to carry a collection of fixed focal length lenses (also known as prime lenses). They cover a wide range of lenses, because of the configuration of their optics. This configuration can compromise the image sharpness as the light has to pass through more glass before reaching the image sensor. However, this can be hardly noticeable to the naked eye. Zoom lenses also typically have smaller maximum apertures than prime lenses. This influences the amount of depth of field possible in low-light settings – although many zooms have ‘image stabilisation’ built in to counter this.

A Digital SLR will normally be available to purchase with a kit lens – the most popular include 28-135mm, 17-85mm and 18-200mm. I currently use a Canon50D SLR, and although I have a range of prime lenses, I find the 18-200mm covers the majority of situations. I found this particularly helpful when I was on the move carrying out my own photography course online assignments, negating the need to carry around a whole array of lenses.

Discover how easy it is to take memorable photographs simply by following a photography course online. Please check out photographycourseonline.info for further information.

Installing ceiling fan and recessed lights in small studio? There are no existing lighting fixtures, I don’t have an attic, there’s someone that lives above me, my ceiling is solid and unscathed.

Is it possible that I install a ceiling fan and recessed lights? already it looks like a hassle or expensive with an electrician. thanksThere are no existing lighting fixtures, I don’t have an attic, there’s someone that lives above me, my ceiling is solid and unscathed.

Is it possible that I install a ceiling fan and recessed lights? already it looks like a hassle or expensive with an electrician. thanks

I live in Los Angeles county, if you have a recommended electrician for the job that’d be great too.

Answer by Silver SurferYour electrician would need to install duct to install the cables. Their are remote control fans but you need power were you want your fan installed just not as many cables to install.

What’s your opinion on Savage lights and Interfit studio lights? These are the links to the two different studio starter lighting kits I’m looking at…..do you use either of these? One is flourescent the other is fan cooled quartz lights. Thanks!

bhphotovideo.com/c/product/490321-REG/Savage_M311000_Variable_Power_3_Flood.html

adorama.com/PAINT117.html

Answer by lensmen2I use Interfit lights, however, they are electronic studio strobes or flash heads with a modeling light built in.

They are 500 watt second flash unites, each, and have a wide range of settings from full power to 1/64th power. The modeling light is also variable and can work in conjunction with the strobes.

Each head is a Master or Slave, depending on how the switch is set. They work with either a PC cord, from camera to flash head. A IR flash head mounted on your camera that can set both off or via a wireless remote system.

Now, the Quartz system is 3000 watts. That WILL put a strain on most house hold wall plugs. They WILL heat up a room, fast..and require cooling the room, a lot..! Most studios are built and wired for high demand lights like these, most homes are not..!

The other lights will be a LOT cooler and NOT put a over load on your or someones wall plugs.

This is something to think about..

For begining studio photos I’d like to get a good and complete studio lights kit that last.Anybody knows?

Answer by fhotoaceStart with incandescent lights. They are less money and you will see the way light paints the subject.

Most photo schools have students use those lights for at least the first year for a good reason.

After over 30 years of shooting using studio lights, I still prefer “hot” lights to studio strobes. I do use them when I rent a studio when I need one, but I don’t own any.

Look for Lowel lights and check the two light kits and find a good portable background stand which you can use with seamless paper.

There is also a kit made buy photobasics.net

Answer by EdwinGo to shutterbug.com and search for lighting. They had an article in the October 2006 issue titled “Quality of Light: Tips & Gear”. Your library might have a copy.

You can also find dozens of books about studio lighting on ebay or and your library may have a few.

Two (2) 50 Watt Table Light Set

One (1) Camera Stand

our (4) Color Backgrounds (include Black, White, Red, Deep Blue)

Saying it improved manufacturing, the Japanese camera and lens maker will start selling a lower-priced SLR in March. Also: perks for those who paid the high price.

(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET)

Sigma has radically repriced its SD1 camera, saying manufacturing improvements let it lower the unusual SLR’s cost by two-thirds to $3,300.

Sigma introduced the SD1 in 2011 with a premium price of $9,700–chiefly for its Foveon sensor, given that other specifications were ordinary. Although the sensor is small, about the size of those on mainstream SLRs from Nikon and Canon, it has the unusual ability to capture red, green, and blue light values for each pixel, not just a single color as with conventional sensors.

The Foveon design therefore can produce better detail, at least theoretically, because the camera doesn’t need to make up the missing data values for a pixel that in reality captures only one of the three colors. To try to spotlight this difference and make its camera compare more favorably to conventional models, it called its 15.4 megapixel Foveon a 46-megapixel sensor and said it matches the resolution of a 30-megapixel traditional design.

Of course, 46 megapixels is a lot–a number only found in medium-format camera territory these days, though Nikon’s new D800 gets close at 36 megapixels. Sigma priced the camera in medium-format territory, too–about that of the Pentax 645D.

Alas, it didn’t live up to the price. Medium-format afficionado Michael Reichmann said in his SD1 review that he liked the Sigma’s ability to capture fine detail, but he couldn’t recommend it overall. “The Pentax 645D is in another league. The SD1 is no competitor to even the lower end of the current medium format market,” Reichmann said.

In announcing the lower price, Sigma this week said the price was not what the company wanted. Sigma Chief Executive Kazuto Yamaki said in a statement:

We could not solve issues related to some of the manufacturing methods before the start of mass production, and the production cost ended up substantially exceeding our originally expected price. As a result, we had no choice but to set the price of the Sigma SD1 high. This caused great discouragement to all of you who looked forward to its release, and wished to experience the very unique image quality of the Sigma SD1 in person; this has become our biggest disappointment and pain.

Since then, overcoming this situation has become the first priority for us and Foveon, and we have together made improvements to reduce production cost substantially. Even though this effort took nearly a year, at last, we achieved a reduction target close to the price we originally planned. Therefore, we decided to release Sigma SD1 as a new product, and were able to make our recent announcement.

The Japanese company also announced a new name for the camera, the SD1 Merrill, after the co-creator of the Foveon sensor, Dick Merrill. The new model will go on sale in March but is identical to the existing SD1.

A big price cut is helpful for future sales, no doubt, but not for those customers who paid the earlier, high price.

For that reason, Sigma will offer a deal on other Sigma products to those customers. Yamaki said:

We fully understand that it is not acceptable to current Sigma SD1 users that a new product with exactly the same specifications as their camera is being released with a substantially revised price a year later. After all, those customers committed to purchasing the Sigma SD1 with great expectations.

During this period, we have seriously considered how we can express our appreciation for our Sigma SD1 customers. Currently, we have a plan to offer a support program for current Sigma SD1 owners. This support program will provide points that can be exchanged for our products. This program is expected to be valid after the release of Sigma SD1 Merrill and it will last until the end of this year, 2012. It will be applicable for all Sigma products including both current and new products to be released this year. More details will be available soon; we appreciate your kind understanding as we finalize this program.

It’s unfortunate that the Foveon sensors haven’t fared better so we could have some better competition for traditional Bayer-pattern sensors, but Sigma’s making the best of a bad situation.
